Why supporting local is important for our Biosphere

Buy Local Day is a community led initiative that supports community, environment and economy on the Sunshine Coast. Every dollar spent locally is a dollar that stays in our community.

Saturday 28 June is Buy Local Day—a day to celebrate the heart of our community: local businesses. From your favourite café to the family-run grocer, every local purchase helps sustain the unique lifestyle we enjoy on the Sunshine Coast.

But Buy Local Day is about more than shopping—it’s about living in harmony with our environment, economy, and community. It contributes to sustaining our Sunshine Coast Biosphere, where together we can grow our local economy.

What does it mean to live in a biosphere reserve?

The Sunshine Coast is proud to be one of only 759 UNESCO biosphere reserves in the world—and part of five in Australia with three adjoining biospheres, alongside Noosa and the Great Sandy.

A biosphere is a place where people and nature thrive together. It’s a living example of how we can balance economic prosperity, social wellbeing, and environmental protection.

Why Buying Local Supports our Biosphere

Our local businesses are deeply connected to the land and lifestyle we love. Supporting local businesses helps to:

  • create jobs  and keeps money circulating in our community
  • reduce emissions  through shorter supply chains
  • celebrate local identity  through food, art, and culture
  • builds resilience  in the face of environmental and economic challenges

When you buy local, you’re not just supporting a business—you’re investing in a sustainable future for the Sunshine Coast.

A word from our Buy Local Day Ambassador and White’s IGA Director, Roz White.

“When you choose to buy locally made, grown, produced, and supplied goods, you're doing more than just shopping — you're investing in your community. Building local supply chains creates more opportunities for innovation, supports local employment, and gives families more choices.

“What I love about buying local is the taste of fresh, seasonal produce picked just hours before it hits your plate. Imagine crisp lettuce harvested in the morning and served at your dinner table that same evening. Local produce not only tastes better, but it also lasts longer in your fridge — reducing food waste and saving you money.”

Make every day Buy Local Day

Buy Local Day challenges you to make every day Buy Local Day to support the Sunshine Coast way of life. Whether it’s a coffee, a gift, or a service—every local purchase helps support local business, protects the environment, strengthens the economy, and builds a thriving community.

Every dollar spent locally is a dollar that stays in our community.
